DIY project to celebrate safely this Halloween – and beyond

(BPT) – This year may have felt like a bunch of tricks, but that doesn’t mean we should miss out on the treats! This DIY Halloween candy holder is a great solution for celebrating the holiday safely, if trick-or-treating is allowed in your area, or if you are having a small outdoor get-together. You will need a glue gun and a staple gun to complete this project. Arrow Fastener’s GT300 Professional High-temp Glue Gun and their iconic T50 Staple Gun are perfect for this project — and great additions to your tool box.

Once completed, this project is both a fun decoration and a useful option for handing out treat bags safely. And the best news? You can repurpose it for any holiday or occasion you want. Simply create different banners to commemorate kids’ birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah — or any other special day.

You will need:

Tools:

Materials:

  • Standard-size wood pallet (48” X 40”)
  • Clothespins
  • Decorative banner
  • Paper candy bags
  • Your choice of candy
  • Decorative lights (optional)
  • Spray paint (optional)

Step 1:

Start by sanding down any rough edges on the pallet before assembly. Then, if desired, spray paint your pallet any color you want, and let it dry before moving on to the next steps.

Step 2:

Next, arrange your pallet so the boards run horizontally rather than vertically. Center your decorative banner at the top of the pallet (against the top-most horizontal board). Using your T50 Heavy-Duty Staple Gun, staple each end of the banner strings so the decorative banner hangs in the center when the pallet is in place on your porch or front step.

Step 3:

If desired, wind your light strands up and over the banner string and repeat all the way across. If your lights are heavy or they don’t stay in place without stapling, you may need to secure them to the pallet with staples.

Step 4:

Using your tape measure or ruler, measure and mark where you’d like to glue your clothespins. In the picture, they are arranged as three rows of five bags, each spaced about 5” apart. You can choose to glue any number that you want, as long as there is space for the bags to hang.

Step 5:

Next, use your Arrow GT300 Professional High-temp Glue Gun to secure each clothespin firmly in place.

Step 6:

Whether you’re team candy bar or candy corn, don’t forget to fill your treat bags with everyone’s favorite goodies! After filling the bags with candy, hang them on to your pallet with the clothespins.

Finished product

You can decorate your candy holder any way you want! Let kids help you add other decorations, like fun fake spiderwebs made from stretched-out cheesecloth or cotton balls, complete with plastic spiders — or go crazy with painted gourds and colorful leaves.

Then make plans to repurpose your candy bag holder for the next holiday or upcoming birthday! You could use each triangle of the banner for letters of your birthday boy or girl’s name, or for a festive holiday message, and add decorations appropriate for each occasion, from balloons or flowers to holly or paper snowflakes.
